Porthmadog to Black Rock Sands Walk

This stunning coastal walk takes you from Porthmadog to the golden expanse of Black Rock Sands, offering a mix of harbor views, countryside paths, and open beaches. The route follows sections of the Wales Coast Path, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sea breeze and panoramic coastal views.

Route Directions

Porthmadog to Borth-y-Gest (3 km / ~45 min)

  • Start in Porthmadog, following the harbor towards the Wales Coast Path.

  • Walk along the Cob embankment, taking in views of Traeth Mawr Estuary and the distant mountains.

  • Follow the well-marked coastal path, passing through Borth-y-Gest, a charming seaside village with colorful houses and sandy coves.

Borth-y-Gest to Morfa Bychan (5 km / ~1.5 hours)

  • Continue along the coastal path, passing small inlets and hidden beaches.

  • The trail follows woodland and open heathland, offering fantastic views over the estuary.

  • Reach Morfa Bychan, a small village near Black Rock Sands.

Morfa Bychan to Black Rock Sands (2 km / ~30 min)

  • Follow the road through Morfa Bychan, leading directly to Black Rock Sands beach entrance.

  • Enjoy a long stretch of golden sand, with stunning views of Criccieth Castle and the mountains beyond.

Optional: Black Rock Sands to Porthmadog Return (15.1 km round trip / 4+ hours total)

  • Either walk back the same way or use local transport (bus/taxi) to return to Porthmadog.
